The Faculty of Medicine is the university’s oldest faculty, with a rich tradition, and offers the best degree programme in Latvia. The faculty has benefited from the legacy, traditions and academic foundations of the pre-war Faculty of Medicine of the University of Latvia as well as the Riga Medical Institute, the university’s forerunners.

The Faculty of Medicine in Riga has signed ERASMUS agreements with many European medical faculties, such as the University of Málaga, the University Miguel Hernández in Elche (Alicante), the University of La Laguna, the University of Debrecen or the Lithuanian University of Health Sciences, among many more.

The Faculty of Medicine is becoming increasingly popular amongst international students in Europe given the high quality education it provides and its low tuition fees. The faculty offers a complete professional education programme and, upon completion of the degree course, graduates can continue their education in specialist residency programmes or enrol in a Master’s degree in the medical field either in Latvia or in any other country of the European Union. Compared to the study of medicine in most European universities, students enrolled in the Faculty of Medicine at Riga Stradiņš University have a much better understanding of clinical practice than in other universities. Students acquire these skills at the clinical university hospitals: Pauls Stradiņš Clinical University Hospital, the Children’s Clinical University Hospital, the Riga East Clinical University Hospital and the Hospital of Traumatology and Orthopaedics. These clinical university hospitals are the main treatment and medical science institutions in Latvia.

The Faculty of Medicine has 23 departments. In addition to coordinating student teaching in medical and clinical disciplines, these departments also cooperate with science institutes and universities in other countries. This means that the departments have become scientific schools and research centres, ensuring the professional quality of teaching staff at Riga Stradiņš University.
